Pandanus
Pandan is a class of plant monocot of the genus Pandanus. Most of its members is growing on the beaches of a tropical area. Members of this plant is characterized by an elongated leaves (such as palm leaves or grass), often jagged edges. The root are large and have akar tunjang that sustain this plant. Pandanus fruit bouquet arranged in a rounded shape, such as fruit durian. This plant size varies, ranging from 50cm up to 5 meters, even in Papua many pandanus to a height of 15 meters. The leaves are always green (evergreen, evergreen ), so some of them used as ornamental plants.
There are at least 600 species of pandanus in the whole world, among which are :
§ White Pandan ( Pandanus baphtisii )
§ African Pandan ( Pandanus pygmeus )
Pandan Bali , which is often used as ornamental plants, is not a member of Pandanus but Cordyline Australis .
Kebumen Regency in Central Java is one of the centers of production and development for woven pandanus in Indonesia. There are a land area about 15 hectares in the vicinity of the Thousand Mountains (Pegunungan Seribu) in the north which planted pandanus thorns as a raw material for making woven of pandanus. Around 10 000 people, mainly women, worked in some center of activities to create and develop crafting for woven pandanus.
